It’s no great secret that golf is very much a mental game and the mind plays a pivotal role in peak performance when you’re out on the golf course. Many great legends of the game realise that success and high-level performance out on the course stems from positive thoughts and a strong focused mind.

Perhaps you’ve had good or even great games in the past, you might even have experienced games where everything went your way, you were in the “zone”, nothing could stop you, but since that high point it’s been difficult to repeat that game, or even be consistent. Perhaps your racking your brain and criticising your physical technique feeling like you’ve lost physical ability when what’s really going on is the cumulative stress and anxiety about each game and how that is affecting you mentally and in turn physiologically.

Many golfers undermine their own success by simply allowing anxiety and stress to take over. They become negative, nervous, fearful, intimidated, angry, distracted and the self-talk affirms their next shot “I’ll never be able to get this putt”- and we all know how it went.

Does it surprise you that golf is said to be more of a mental than a physical game? The percentage can be debated over and over again and I believe it’s probably different in every player but think about, for you, how many rounds have you given away to one bad hole? When your confidence falls, you berate yourself inside while stress and any number of other negative emotions set in? THIS is what affects your game, the thoughts and pictures you’re playing in your mind and how your body is physiologically responding to what’s going on in your mind. When the stress response is initiated inside of you it’s both a mental and physical game-changer, without doubt, so WHY then do you still equate golf ability with physical skill?

How many times has that five inches between your ears ruined your game?

The main reason why golf is so mentally demanding is simply down to time. Golf is a game where you spend more time thinking than playing. These lapses in actual play is where you can anticipate your own performance and pressure can build. Concentration fades and anxiety rises. The slow pace of the game means you have more time to essentially let your mind take over which can open the door to negative thoughts, negative self-talk and negative physiological responses. How would you like to be in control of this?
The thing that unites all the greats in golf is not similarities in their physical game but their intense focus on the mental side of the game. The historical legends and the modern-day superstars like Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIllroy and the future champions to come, all share the same unique perspective which is a positive, disciplined mind and THAT is the key to reaching the highest level of success in golf. The fact is confidence, optimism, mental power and the remarkable qualities of a champion are not natural gifts – they’re all qualities these legends work on, develop and continually strive to improve.

The only difference between them and you is that they have discovered how to harness their mental power.
